Jed Gilchrist
Hey Jed,
Thanks for posting my stuff so fast! Life hasn't been TOO rough as
a Jed...I
actually get a lot of compliments in my adult life on having the name
(as if I had anything to do with it!) As a kid I guess it was
moderately
tough now and then, especially with the full name Jedediah, but at that
time, that which is different is scary and wrong, so I understand to a
certain degree.
Some of my favorite taunts were: nicknames like Jedefer (my "twin
sister"),
Jedediarrhea, Jethro; and the perennial favorite, "Let me tell you
a story about a man named Jed..." Funny how no one knew how the rest of
the song went...
One girl in junior high combined a few taunts into one choice song that went a little like: "Let me tell you a story 'bout a man named Jed, had a lot of hair but it wasn't on his head." A variation on this theme recently sprang to life when I was backpacking in New Zealand and a couple of drunk Irish girls thought they were oh so clever in coming up with this on their very own...I didn't have the heart to tell them it was old hat. :)
The only other one I can think of was popularized when the Boys Don't Cry song "I Wanna be a Cowboy" was a big hit (mid-80's, baby), and by cleverly inserting my name into a choice moment in the tune, people came up with the wonderful "My name is Jed...one day, I'll be dead, yo-yo..." To those that haven't heard the song, that probably doesn't make much sense, but to the children of the 80's, I'm sure you can hear it in your head right now.
Thanks again for the wonderful homage to a name I've grown to love
and
be
very proud of.
Cheers,
~Jedediah Clinton Wolfgang
